Addiction as a reason for tooth loss

Consuming stimulants can cause sensitive teeth, tooth decay, broken teeth or tooth loss.

The use of stimulants is a natural part of human life. This includes both legal and illegal things. Research shows that illegality and harsh punishments don’t stop people from taking drugs.

Therefore, in developed regions there is an increasing emphasis on harm reduction instead of prosecution. Drug users are not seen as criminals, but rather as those in need of help, with research into the causes and extensive social understanding playing an important role.

In addition to the enjoyment factor, all of these products have in common that they are harmful to the teeth, albeit in different ways.

In Europe, the top three places in terms of consumption frequency are still occupied by alcohol, cannabis and tobacco, which attack teeth in different ways.

The alcohol

Bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar, so drinking sugary drinks, including alcohol, encourages bacterial growth. These bacteria produce acids that weaken tooth enamel and cause tooth decay.

The tobacco

The biggest problem with smoking is that it destroys the periodontium, i.e. it causes bone destruction around the teeth, which can lead to loosening and loss of teeth.

The cannabis

THC prevents calcium from reaching different parts of the body. The presence of calcium is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and bones.

Other narcotics

The amphetamines and methamphetamines occupy a very prominent place in the consumer spectrum, so it is not surprising that the symptoms resulting from their destruction have their own name: “Meth Mouth”.

Symptoms of this

  • extensive tooth decay
  • fragile teeth
  • painful, sensitive teeth
  • dry mouth
  • temperature increase
  • foul breath

Our constructive attitude

In addition to the professional attitude, we at the FlyDent Clinic attach great importance to empathy, discretion and gentleness. We do not judge anyone because of possible addictions, but rather try to have a positive effect on our patients with particular sensitivity.

We offer our patients appropriate oral hygiene advice that helps maintain the health of the teeth and mouth as good as possible, even when consuming various legal and illegal drugs.

Because of our special attitude, we have been a preferred choice for patients with emotional, alcohol or drug problems for decades, because together we always find a solution to dental problems, including these types.
